Election Security Team Meets NPP Ahead of 2026 Primaries

The National Election Security Taskforce has commenced discussions with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the party intensifies preparations for its presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The initial engagement, held with the NPP’s Presidential Election Committee, served to formally inform the taskforce about the internal elections and to share crucial details. These included the election timetable, proposed locations, and the anticipated range of activities leading up to the polls. Security officials highlighted the importance of this information for effective planning and deployment of personnel.

Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, addressing the meeting, described the interaction as a vital step towards ensuring seamless coordination between political parties and security agencies during internal electoral processes.

He explained that early consultations enable security agencies to foresee potential challenges and implement preventative measures. “Early consultations help us anticipate potential challenges and put preventive measures in place,” he stated.

Mr. Yohuno further assured the NPP that the Ghana Police Service, working alongside other security agencies, would collaborate closely with the Electoral Commission and the party itself to guarantee a peaceful, transparent, and well-organised primary. He stressed that maintaining calm and order is of paramount importance.

The National Election Security Taskforce reaffirmed its commitment to engaging with all stakeholders to ensure public safety and uphold stability before, during, and after the NPP’s presidential primaries. This forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the credibility of electoral processes across the nation.
