"Election Commission Confirms 2024 Candidate List"

The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that only the candidates who participated in the 2024 Parliamentary Election in the Kpandai Constituency will be eligible to contest in the upcoming rerun, as ordered by the High Court.

According to Mr. Fred Tetteh, the Deputy Director of Research at the EC, the Commission will not be issuing a new notice of poll, and no additional candidates will be considered beyond the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the All People’s Congress (APC) representatives who originally stood for election.

“We have received the notification from Parliament, but the Commission has not settled on a date for the rerun,” Mr. Tetteh told the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.

The decision to rerun the election stems from a November 2025 ruling by the Tamale High Court, which annulled the election of Mr. Matthew Nyindam as the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, following allegations of irregularities. The court mandated a fresh election be held within 30 days.

Parliament formally communicated the vacancy to the EC on December 4, 2025, through a letter from the Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to the EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa.

Mr. Tetteh stated that the EC is currently reviewing both the Court’s directives and Parliament’s notification to determine the necessary procedural steps. “Preparations are ongoing, and once the Commission meets, an official date will be communicated,” he added.

The EC anticipates announcing a timetable for the rerun in the coming days, as political activity in the constituency continues. The NDC has expressed its acceptance of the court’s ruling, while the NPP has voiced its disagreement, questioning why a complete rerun is necessary instead of focusing on the affected polling stations.

Mr. Nyindam, the incumbent MP, has filed a notice of appeal and a stay of execution against the High Court’s decision. The NPP, during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, also criticized the Clerk of Parliament’s decision to inform the EC of the vacancy prior to the resolution of the appeal.

The Kpandai Constituency, situated in the Kpandai District of the Northern Region, saw Mr. Nyindam secure 27,947 votes (53.47%) in the 2024 election. Mr. Daniel Nsala Wakpal of the NDC received 24,213 votes (46.33%), and Mr. Donkor Eric Nipani of the APC garnered 104 votes. The constituency comprises 152 polling stations and a registered voter population of 66,850.
