DVLA Introduces New Number Plates in Oti Region

Politics

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has commenced the distribution of new Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled license plates in the Oti Region, marking a significant step in its nationwide vehicle registration modernisation project.

These new plates incorporate advanced security features, including RFID technology, distinct regional codes, and unique identifiers. The DVLA aims to bolster vehicle tracking, curb smuggling activities, and ultimately enhance road safety with this upgrade.

Speaking at the rollout event, Deputy Director of Vehicle Licensing and Registration, Kwasi Bona Otuo Serebour, urged vehicle owners in the Oti Region to actively participate in the enrollment process. He highlighted the benefits of the new system, emphasizing improved security, increased efficiency, and better regulatory compliance.

Mr. Serebour also cautioned drivers against rushing to register new vehicles, clarifying that the full-scale nationwide registration will officially begin in January 2026. Existing vehicle owners are encouraged to visit any DVLA centre across the country to have the new plates installed on their vehicles.

In an interview with Adom News, Fuseini Mohammed, a Regional Member of the Cargo Union, expressed his support for the electronic plates, along with other drivers. “These new plates will be a great deterrent to robberies and help clamp down on illegal smuggling,” he stated.

Mr. Mohammed further added that digitalisation is a welcome development and will foster a more orderly relationship between drivers and the police, particularly regarding issues like road insurance and vehicle documentation.
