An emotional atmosphere gripped the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday as thousands mourned Highlife legend, Daddy Lumba, and his wife, Odo Broni, was overcome with grief during the final funeral rites.
Serwaa Broni, visibly distraught, broke down in tears, attracting the attention and comfort of nearby mourners. The touching scene unfolded as a large gathering of music lovers, dignitaries, and well-wishers convened to pay their last respects to the fallen icon.
The funeral was held despite months of legal challenges which threatened to disrupt the ceremony. A High Court injunction had briefly halted preparations, fueled by family disagreements concerning burial arrangements, matters that were widely publicized in national media.
Attendees largely donned traditional funeral attire of muted colours, with many choosing to wear accessories featuring Daddy Lumba’s image, a testament to his lasting cultural impact.
Notable figures present included the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, and Abusuapanyin Kofi Owusu. Business magnates Osei Kwame Despite and Akwasi Sarpong also joined the mourners.
A particularly poignant moment occurred when Nana Acheampong, deeply moved, performed the very first song he and Daddy Lumba collaborated on, a heartfelt tribute to their musical partnership.
The performance evoked strong memories and further heightened the emotional intensity of the event, underscoring the profound loss felt by the Ghanaian music community and the nation as a whole.
