Parliament has approved the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2025, paving the way for the institution to be officially renamed the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo.
The decision follows concerns raised by traditional authorities and community leaders in the Navrongo area, who felt the original name could be seen as excluding local interests and potentially causing division.
These concerns were formally brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education, leading to a review of the university’s naming convention. According to sources within the Ministry, the review process was thorough and inclusive.
Government officials state the name change is intended to foster inclusivity and strengthen national unity, while also aligning with standard global practices for naming higher education institutions. “A location-based name better reflects the university’s national character and sense of shared ownership,” one official explained.
The University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Navrongo, is one of Ghana’s newest public tertiary institutions, situated in the Upper East Region. It was established to provide practical, technology-focused education, with a strong emphasis on applied sciences, innovation, and skills development to bolster national progress.
The government expresses confidence that the new name will solidify the university’s identity as a national asset, encourage greater participation from stakeholders, and make it more appealing to students, researchers, and development partners, both domestically and internationally.
Further updates on the official renaming ceremony and transition plans are expected to be announced by the Ministry of Education in the coming weeks.
