Former China Sports Chief Gets Suspended Death Sentence

China’s former sports chief Gou Zhongwen has been handed a death sentence with a two‑year reprieve for massive bribery and abuse of power, state broadcaster CCTV reported Monday.

The Intermediate People’s Court of Yancheng in Jiangsu Province announced that Gou will be stripped of political rights for life, have all personal property confiscated, and that the death sentence will be automatically commuted to life imprisonment after the two‑year reprieve unless he commits further crimes.

Investigators found that between 2009 and 2024 Gou exploited his roles as Beijing’s vice mayor, a senior Communist Party official and head of China’s General Administration of Sport to secure project approvals and business favors, accepting bribes worth more than 236 million yuan (about $33.4 million).

During his 2012‑2013 stint as vice mayor, he allegedly manipulated project acquisitions, causing severe losses to public assets and the state’s interests, prompting the court to label his conduct “especially vile.”

The court said the amount of illicit wealth, the seriousness of the offence and its social impact justified a death sentence, but combined the penalties for bribery and abuse of power into a single punitive order.

Because Gou confessed, voluntarily disclosed undisclosed bribes, returned the illicit gains and expressed remorse, judges opted to suspend the execution of the death penalty, allowing the two‑year reprieve to run before conversion to life imprisonment without parole.

Ghana’s Anti‑Corruption Commission welcomed the ruling, noting that “strong punitive measures against high‑level corruption send a clear signal that no public official is above the law,” echoing Ghana’s own drive to curb graft in public offices.

The case serves as a stark reminder to officials worldwide that misuse of authority can attract the harshest penalties, and it will be closely watched as China continues its high‑profile anti‑corruption campaign.
