Chieftaincy Dispute Erupts in Akyem Kwabeng, Atiwa West

Local News

A chieftaincy dispute has erupted in Akyem Kwabeng, Atiwa West District, sparking heightened tension and prompting calls for intervention from the community, the Abusuapanin of the Asona Mmabaduam family, and local officials.

The feud, which centres on the rightful succession of the traditional stool, has divided the town into rival factions. Residents report that gatherings at the local palace have turned confrontational, raising fears of violence.

“I am calling on President John Mahama and the National Security Council to step in and ensure peace prevails,” said Baffour Oduro Frikyi, Abusuapanin of the Asona Mmabaduam family. He added that without adequate security, no member of Kwabeng should be held responsible for any outbreak.

Community elders echoed the appeal, urging authorities to provide “adequate security protection” to prevent further clashes. One unnamed resident expressed, “We want peace; we cannot afford another round of fighting that tears families apart.”

Former President John Dramani Mahama, who also chairs the National Democratic Congress, has not yet responded publicly. However, the Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Honourable Kofi Kwarteng, confirmed that the issue has been flagged to the Ministry of Interior for swift action.

Police units have been deployed to monitor hotspots, but locals say the presence remains minimal. The appeal to the National Security Council seeks a more robust deployment to deter any escalation and protect lives.

The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders urging swift resolution. Authorities are expected to convene a mediation committee within the coming days, aiming to restore calm and uphold the dignity of the Akyem Kwabeng chieftaincy institution.
