Two people lost their lives and more than ten were injured early Saturday night when a church bus rammed into a crowd attending a street float at Assin Dansame on the Assin Fosu–Kumasi highway.
The collision occurred at about nine o’clock, according to the Central North Regional MTTD Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor. The white bus, marked with Methodist Wesley Church signage and carrying members of the Second Chance Ministry, was returning from a 31st‑Night crossover service in Kumasi to Breman Asikuma in the Asikuma‑Odoben‑Brakwa District.
Among the dead were a twenty‑one‑year‑old apprentice and a Sunyani Technical University student, both pronounced dead on the spot. Roughly ten others sustained varying injuries and were rushed to hospitals in the Central Region for treatment.
Eyewitnesses said the crowd had gathered to watch the night‑time float when the bus veered off the road and struck the participants. The sudden impact sparked anger among residents; groups of youths vandalised the vehicle, leaving it severely damaged before police arrived to restore order.
ASP Lumor confirmed that investigations have been launched to determine the cause of the crash. “We are working closely with the traffic police and the church to establish the factors that led to this tragedy,” he stated.
The Police Service has urged motorists to observe speed limits and exercise caution, especially during festive events, and has promised to provide assistance to the injured and bereaved families.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses and as more information becomes available from the hospitals and the Methodist Wesley Church.
