Björkegren Praises Black Queens' Progress in 2025 Review

Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has voiced his satisfaction with the team’s development throughout 2025, marking a period of significant progress for the national women’s football side.

The Swedish tactician assumed his role in February, stepping in after Nora Hauptle’s departure to lead the Zambia women’s national team. Since then, Björkegren has overseen a period of growth and achievement for the Black Queens.

Under his guidance, Ghana secured a commendable bronze medal finish at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and successfully qualified for the next edition of the tournament. This dual success demonstrates the team’s improving competitiveness on the continental stage.

The year concluded with a closely contested 1-0 friendly defeat against England at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton, providing a valuable test for the squad against a top-tier opponent.

“I feel that we are doing extremely well right now,” Björkegren told the Ghana Football Association (GFA). “We used the first couple of friendlies to rotate a lot to take a look at the squad, to give some of the players who had been in the squad before a chance, and since then, we have been giving a lot of other players a chance.”

He further noted the positive response from players given opportunities. “Some of the players grabbed the opportunity. But at the end of the day, we found a really good squad going into the WAFCON.”

Björkegren emphasized the importance of team building, stating, “We had a pre-camp before, where we grew a lot as a group, enjoyed our time on the pitch, and worked hard through many meetings.”

Looking ahead, Björkegren and his team will now focus their preparations on the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to commence in March. The Black Queens will aim to build on their recent successes and challenge for the title.
