Benfica’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League have received a significant lift following a hard-fought victory over Napoli, marking their second consecutive win in the competition.
Despite a challenging start to the league phase with four straight defeats, Jose Mourinho’s side has found its footing, first securing a win against Ajax and now overcoming the Italian champions on home soil.
The match saw several close calls early on. Benfica threatened with consecutive chances within seconds, Franjo Ivanovic testing Napoli’s goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, and Fredrik Aursnes firing narrowly wide.
Benfica finally broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when Richard Rios cleverly flicked the ball into the net after Napoli’s defence failed to clear a dangerous cross.
Rios continued to influence the game, providing a pinpoint low cross from the right early in the second half, which Leandro Barreiro expertly converted to double Benfica’s lead.
Napoli launched waves of attacks in search of a goal to ignite their comeback. However, Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay headed a corner wide with Benfica’s Anatoliy Trubin having earlier denied David Neres.
The results leave Napoli in 23rd position in the 36-team league with seven points, while Benfica, the two-time European champions, find themselves two places below with six points.
Teams finishing between ninth and 24th after the league phase will compete in a two-legged knockout play-off round. Both Napoli and Benfica will need to accrue further points to ensure their participation.
Napoli’s remaining fixtures include an away trip to Copenhagen on January 20th, followed by a home match against Chelsea on January 28th. Benfica faces a challenging journey to Juventus on January 21st before hosting Real Madrid the following week.
