Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) received a considerable boost on Wednesday as Electoral Area Coordinators in three constituencies pledged their full support.
All Electoral Area Coordinators in Yunyoo and Chereponi in the North East Region, and Saboba in the Northern Region, have openly endorsed the former Vice President. This follows similar endorsements in Yagaba, Walewale, and Bunkpurugu a day prior, signaling a growing wave of support for Dr. Bawumia within the party.
During separate meetings in Yunyoo and Chereponi, the coordinators stepped forward to declare their commitment to Dr. Bawumia, doing so before a large crowd of polling station executives. The endorsements continued in Saboba, where coordinators also backed him unanimously.
Remarkably, coordinators in all three constituencies urged Dr. Bawumia not to campaign to them, stating their minds were already made up. “We have already decided,” one coordinator reportedly said, “your vision is what we need.”
In Saboba, initial resistance from supporters prevented Dr. Bawumia from immediately addressing the gathering. However, after appealing for the opportunity, he delivered a concise ten-minute speech, expressing gratitude for the overwhelming backing – a departure from his usual hour-long presentations.
Dr. Bawumia’s campaign has been gaining traction at the grassroots level, with Electoral Area Coordinators across the country publicly throwing their weight behind his candidacy. These endorsements are seen as strategically important.
Political analysts emphasize that Electoral Area Coordinators are a vital component of the NPP’s electoral college. Their support is considered crucial, as they maintain close ties with polling station executives, and their decisions often reflect broader sentiment within the party’s base.
