Bawumia Mocks NDC 24-Hour Economy Plan and 'Dumsor'

The debate around Ghana’s economic future has taken a sharp turn as Dr. Bawumia, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, leveled pointed criticisms against the NDC’s proposed 24-hour economy plan. In a recent address to the Young Executive Forum in London, Bawumia framed the NDC’s vision as fundamentally unrealistic given the nation’s current struggle with persistent power outages, infamously known as ‘Dumsor’. He argues that the NDC government is failing to deliver on its promises and, more critically, is steering Ghana back into an era of unreliable power supply, which directly undermines the feasibility of any 24-hour economic model. According to Bawumia, “How can you have a 24-hour economy with dumsor at the same time? I mean, you can’t.” This statement encapsulates the core of his critique: the practical impossibility of sustaining a vibrant, round-the-clock economy without a dependable electricity infrastructure. The discussion surrounding Bawumia NDC 24-hour economy plan is now a focal point in Ghanaian political discourse.

Bawumia’s Accusations Against the NDC

Dr. Bawumia’s critique extends beyond mere skepticism, presenting a series of accusations against the NDC’s governance and economic strategies. He suggests a pattern of broken promises and a disregard for the essential conditions needed for economic progress. Bawumia’s claims touch on various aspects of Ghanaian life, from the availability of electricity to the cost of living and the well-being of key sectors like cocoa farming and education.

Bawumia directly addressed the NDC’s 24-hour economy promise, asserting that it has quietly disappeared from their policy agenda. The resurgence of ‘Dumsor,’ according to Bawumia, further exemplifies the NDC’s disconnect from the realities on the ground. He stated, “Dumsor has taken over, and we warned Ghanaians that dumsor and NDC work together…” The implications of these frequent power outages are far-reaching, impacting businesses, disrupting daily life, and casting a shadow over any aspirations for a continuous economic cycle.

Beyond the energy sector, Bawumia also highlighted what he sees as unmet promises across various sectors. He pointed to the rising prices of essential goods like cement, the unfulfilled commitments to cocoa farmers regarding fair prices, and the continuation of teacher licensure exams despite earlier pledges to abolish them. These examples, according to Bawumia, contribute to a growing sense of disillusionment among key segments of the population, including farmers, teachers, and small business owners.

NPP’s Prospects and Bawumia’s Apology

Despite his criticisms of the current administration, Bawumia expressed optimism about the future prospects of the NPP. He voiced confidence in the party’s potential return to power in 2028, drawing on historical trends and what he perceives as a growing dissatisfaction with the NDC’s performance. “I am very, very optimistic about 2028… I believe that 2028 NPP is going to come back into government,” Bawumia stated, acknowledging the inherent challenges faced by first-time presidential candidates in Ghana’s political landscape.

In a notable gesture, Bawumia also addressed past shortcomings of the NPP, offering an apology on behalf of the party for mistakes made during their previous tenure. “We got quite a few things wrong, and I think that on my own behalf… I apologise to all of you for us not getting the things right that we should have gotten,” he said. This acknowledgment of past errors signals a willingness to learn from experience and rebuild trust with the Ghanaian public.

Bawumia also drew parallels between President Akufo-Addo and former President John Kufuor, suggesting that Akufo-Addo’s legacy will be more appreciated with time. He noted, “Today, he is one of the most popular presidents who has come in the history of our country. He’s very popular today because people have had a chance to reflect on his accomplishments.”

In summary, Bawumia’s critique centers on the NDC’s handling of the economy and energy sector, particularly the resurgence of ‘Dumsor’ and the perceived abandonment of the 24-hour economy plan. His message underscored the need for reliable infrastructure and consistent policies to foster economic growth. As the political debate intensifies, the focus remains on the feasibility and impact of different economic visions for Ghana’s future. The Bawumia NDC 24-hour economy debate continues to shape the political landscape, influencing discussions on governance, economic strategy, and the well-being of Ghanaian citizens.
