Bawumia Leads NPP Grassroots Poll

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the clear favourite to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general election, according to a new survey of party members.

The poll, conducted by Governance Lab Africa in November and December 2025, reveals that 51.8% of the 340 NPP members surveyed would vote for Dr. Bawumia if the primary were held today. This gives him a substantial lead over his main rivals.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong garnered 20.6% of the votes, while Kennedy Agyapong received 18.8%. “Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerges as the clear frontrunner,” the survey’s executive summary stated, highlighting his significant advantage within the party.

Interestingly, the report indicates a high degree of certainty among respondents, with 84.4% stating their choice is firmly made. However, Governance Lab Africa cautioned that the survey reflects the views of general party members, and not necessarily the delegates who will ultimately decide the flagbearer.

The survey also shed light on the key issues driving the race. Economic anxieties are high, with nearly half (46.5%) of respondents identifying job creation and youth unemployment as the most pressing concern for the 2028 election.

“Electability concerns dominate candidate evaluation,” the report further found, with 44.1% of members prioritizing a candidate’s ability to win the next general election. This suggests a pragmatic approach among party members as they consider their options.

The sample was largely comprised of men (87.9%) and highly educated individuals (92.9% with tertiary education). Notably, a significant majority (73.8%) admitted to not closely following news related to the primary contest.

With the primary election just next month, Dr. Acheampong and Mr. Agyapong face a considerable challenge in attempting to close a gap of over 30 percentage points, particularly given that a large proportion of party members have already made up their minds.
