Bank of Ghana Discusses Digital Credit Services with Media

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has engaged with the media to enhance public understanding of the rapidly expanding digital credit sector in Ghana.

The engagement session is part of the central bank’s wider strategy to foster responsible lending and bolster consumer protection as digital financial services become increasingly prevalent.

Bernard Otabil, Director of Communication at the BoG, highlighted the crucial role of the media in shaping public opinion and promoting financial literacy. He stated that with the growing accessibility of digital credit through mobile phones and online platforms, providing the public with accurate, timely, and clear information is paramount.

Mr. Otabil emphasized that collaboration with the media is vital to bridge the information gap surrounding digital lending. He explained that while instant mobile loans, fintech-driven credit products, and online lending platforms offer opportunities, particularly for underserved populations, they also pose risks related to transparency, data security, and potentially exploitative practices.

“The media remains one of our strongest partners in ensuring that consumers understand their rights and responsibilities when accessing digital credit,” Mr. Otabil said. “By working closely with journalists, we can amplify messages on responsible borrowing, regulatory safeguards, and the need for customers to use only licensed and compliant service providers.”

The BoG, he further noted, is continuously strengthening its regulatory and supervisory frameworks to address emerging challenges within the digital lending ecosystem. This includes enforcing compliance among digital lenders, monitoring unethical debt recovery methods, and safeguarding customer data.

Participants were briefed on key aspects of the BoG’s consumer protection guidelines, current regulations for digital credit providers, and the central bank’s ongoing efforts to maintain financial stability.

The event concluded with a renewed call for ongoing collaboration between the BoG and the media to protect consumer interests and build confidence in Ghana’s digital financial services sector.
