Asanko Gold Ghana Offers Scholarships to Needy Students

Asanko Gold Ghana Limited has launched a comprehensive educational scholarship scheme aimed at supporting brilliant students from its host communities who face financial challenges, offering a beacon of hope for those whose dreams of tertiary education were threatened by economic hardship.

The initiative, a key component of the company’s five-year Social and Economic Development Plan (SEDEP), will benefit up to fifteen students annually with full support for tuition, accommodation, and other approved academic expenses.

Each beneficiary will receive up to GH₵10,000 per year, potentially totaling GH₵30,000–GH₵40,000 throughout their academic program.

Twenty-four-year-old Emmanuel Aboagye from Manso Nkensu, one of the first recipients, shared how the scholarship has revitalized his ambition to become an engineer, a goal nearly abandoned after experiencing personal loss and financial difficulties.

“With everything that happened—losing my parents and even the relative who wanted to help me—I thought it was never going to happen,” Aboagye said. “Sometimes I would sit indoors crying because I love to study. Today, securing this scholarship to pursue engineering has given me a new beginning.”

Community leaders echo Aboagye’s sentiment, stating that his story is representative of the struggles faced by many young people in the Amansie West and Amansie South Districts, where financial constraints often force students to forgo higher education.

Asanko Gold Ghana emphasizes that the scholarship is designed to provide holistic support, not only enabling access to university but also fostering success throughout the students’ educational and professional journeys. Ahmed Mohadini-Yahaya, General Manager, explained the company’s commitment to empowering local youth to assume leadership roles.

“We hope they will return as engineers, teachers, health professionals, entrepreneurs, and leaders,” he said. “Our long-term goal is to see young people from the catchment areas qualify for and occupy critical positions at the mine.”

A Scholarship Selection Committee, comprising representatives from the District Education Directorates, Assemblies, Divisional Chiefs, and Asanko officials, will oversee a rigorous screening process. The committee will also monitor the academic progress of beneficiaries and facilitate opportunities for internships and national service.

Parents and chiefs from the host communities have lauded the intervention, describing it as a crucial lifeline with the potential to transform families for generations to come.

Emmanuel, now embarking on his engineering studies, expressed his profound gratitude. “I am very grateful to Asanko Gold Ghana for giving me this opportunity. Without this scholarship, I doubt I would ever have entered university,” he stated.
