Holders Ivory Coast began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mozambique in Marrakech on Tuesday.
A composed finish from Manchester United forward Amad Diallo four minutes into the second half proved to be the difference for the Elephants, who are aiming to become the first team since Egypt in 2010 to successfully defend their Afcon title.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous opportunities, Emerse Fae’s side found Mozambique’s goalkeeper, Ernan, in inspired form. Ernan denied both Franck Kessie and a miscued effort from Yan Diomande before the break.
The breakthrough finally arrived courtesy of Diallo, who expertly met Kessie’s headed knockdown with a low strike that squeezed past Reinildo.
Mozambique, ranked 60 places below Ivory Coast, remained resolute and almost snatched a late equaliser. Substitute Vakoun Bayo was thwarted by a double clearance from Ernan and Guima, while Geny Catamo forced a fine save from Yahia Fofana in the dying seconds.
“We knew it would be a tough game, Mozambique are a spirited side,” said a relieved Emerse Fae after the match. “The most important thing is to get the three points and build from here.”
Mozambique, who narrowly missed out on a shock win against Egypt in their opening game at the 2023 tournament, will look to bounce back when they face Gabon on Sunday. Ivory Coast, meanwhile, face a stern test against five-time champions Cameroon.
A historic moment for Mozambique saw Domingues, aged 42 years and 41 days, become the oldest outfield player to feature in an Africa Cup of Nations match, surpassing the previous record but falling short of Essam El-Hadary’s goalkeeping record.
