Multiple Handicap children are children who have more than one handicap. This means that it is possible for an individual to have more than one handicap or deviation. Example of multiple handicap are deaf and blind, crippled and blind, crippled, blind and mentally retarded. MULTIPLE HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

CLASSIFICATION AND IDENTIFICATIONS

(A)MENTALLY RETARDED AND CELERAL PALSIED CHILDREN

Children with this multiple handicap have brain damage which results in mental retardation in addition to Motor or movement problem. Such children even though are mentally retarded love difficulty in moving the body or walking. They can be identified through the following.

MULTIPLE HANDICAPPED CHILDREN

  1. Difficulty in expressing themselves through speech
  2. Difficulty in motor co-ordination such as moving the hands to grasp objects.
  3. Low capacity in learning and retaining what is learnt

(B) MENTALLY RETARDED – HEATING IMPAIRED CHILDREN

Those group of children are both mentally retarded and hearing impaired. Problem with children with both mental retardation and hearing impaired are

  1. They have problem in speech and language development.
  2. Below average academic performance in school.
  3. They put up behaviours not consistent with their level of maturity.

(C)EMOTIONAL DISORDERS – COMMUNICATION DISORDER

The problem of children with emotional disorders and communication disorders is referred to as “Autism”. The team autism is used to describe children who show odd behaviours and serious developmental delays in social and communication areas.

CHARACTERISTICS

  1. Delayed language development
  2. Odd behavoiurs such as repectitive body movements like jumping, lining up toys etc.

(D) BEHAVIOUR DISORDERS – HEARING IMPAIRMENT

These children have problems with both behavior and hearing.

CHARACTERISTICS

  1. They have poor socialization habits
  2. Learning is not pleasant to them
  3. Lack of self – control
  4. Lack of speech and language skills necessary or daily conversation.
