MEANING: SPECIAL NEEDS

All about special needs children

Generally, special needs education should be viewed as individually planned, systematically implemented and carefully evaluated instruction to help exceptional learners achieve the greatest possible personal self-sufficiency and success in present and future environments (Heward and Orlandsky 1992).

  1. Individually planned refers to special education programme designed to suit an individual learning problem and not a group. As a teacher, you must prepare teaching materials that suit the unique needs of every individual, not the needs of a group of children.
  2. Systematically implemented means that whatever material that is designed to teach an individual should follow a particular sequence eg. We must teach listening before speaking and reading before writing.
  3. Carefully evaluated instruction tells us that there must be constant assessment of whatever material we design to teach an individual. This assessment will provide us feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of the programme.
  4. Exceptional children refers to individuals with disabilities as well as those with high intellectual abilities such as the gifted and talented.

According to Hallahan and Kauffman, (1986) special needs education means specially designed instruction that meets the unique needs of an exceptional child.

UNESCO (1983) also defines special needs education as a form of education provided for those who are not achieving through ordinary provision, the levels of education and other attainments appropriate at their age.

In simple terms, special needs education caters for children whose educational, social and other needs cannot be met through the ordinary ways of teaching in the ordinary school. For example, if there is a school pupil in a class who always copies wrongly from the chalkboard and the teacher makes the writing bolder to enable the child overcome the problem, the teacher is practicing special education. The reason is that since the ordinary writing is not helpful to the child, the teacher is using specially designed instruction to help the child.
