Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has charged newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) to prioritize transparency, accountability, and collaboration in their legislative duties.
Mr. Bagbin made the call during an informal meeting with first-time MPs, emphasizing that healthy political debate is vital for a robust democracy. “Ghana has consciously chosen a multiparty system, and differing viewpoints are essential to its strength,” he stated.
The Speaker encouraged the MPs to develop expertise in specific legislative areas and actively participate in Committee work to effectively represent their constituents. He highlighted Committee business as the core of parliamentary work, stressing the importance of thorough research and preparation.
Addressing common misunderstandings, Mr. Bagbin clarified that parliamentary privileges and immunities are “not personal favors but safeguards for the people’s voice.” He also voiced concerns about the lack of attention given to the welfare of local assembly members, promising to work towards strengthening decentralization structures.
To foster a more open and accountable Parliament, Mr. Bagbin revealed plans for televised sessions involving senior MPs, the media, and the public. This initiative, he believes, will enhance transparency and public engagement.
Responding to recent commentary, the Speaker defended his choice of attire, asserting that it reflects Ghana’s rich cultural heritage and parliamentary tradition. He maintained that parliamentary dress is a symbol of national pride.
Mr. Bagbin concluded by commending the new MPs for their commitment and offering his full support as they navigate their roles and strive for excellence in leadership and ethics.
