The Akyem-Kwabeng District Police Command has apprehended one person in connection with illegal mining activities occurring within the premises of the Kwabeng Anglican Senior High Technical School in the Atiwa West District.
Tweneboah, also known as “Gogome,” was arrested on December 15th at approximately 5:30 a.m. during a police operation authorized by the Atiwa West District Chief Executive, Hon. Amo Johnson Anom.
The arrest comes after reports surfaced regarding the illegal mining, locally referred to as ‘galamsey’, taking place near the school. Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a Communications Team member of the New Patriotic Party, initially highlighted the issue on his Facebook page, prompting further investigation.
Prior to Gogome’s arrest, the District Security Taskforce conducted a monitoring exercise roughly two weeks ago. They attempted to arrest individuals engaged in mining activities just beyond the school’s fence. However, the suspects managed to escape upon spotting the taskforce.
During that operation, the team successfully seized mining equipment, including two excavators, which had been abandoned at the site.
Following the recent arrest, Hon. Amo Johnson Anom stated that he has instructed Xtra Gold Mining Company to undertake the reclamation of the land that has been degraded by the illegal mining. “The district will not tolerate any unlawful activity that jeopardizes the livelihoods of the people of Atiwa West,” he told journalists.
The DCE further revealed that the police are currently investigating the matter and will present the suspect before a court of competent jurisdiction to face the full rigors of the law.
