Two female prison officers were killed and two male officers critically injured in a road crash on Saturday morning in Akuse, Eastern Region.
The accident occurred between Akuse Junction and the VRA Junction at about 08:00 GMT, involving a Toyota Corolla sedan (registration GS 4817‑17). The vehicle was carrying four prison staff from the Akuse Local Prison when it collided on the busy stretch of road.
According to the Akuse District Police Command, the two female officers died on the scene, while the two male officers sustained multiple fractures and severe injuries. They were first taken to Akuse Government Hospital for emergency care before being transferred to St. Joseph Hospital in Koforidua for specialised treatment.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues and are praying for the swift recovery of the injured officers,” said Constable Samuel Osei, a senior officer at the prison. “The investigation will be thorough to determine the exact cause of this tragic incident.”
Citi News reports that prison staff in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality are in a state of shock, with many mourning the two officers who lost their lives and offering prayers for their injured comrades.
The police have launched a formal investigation, focusing on gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and examining the vehicle to ascertain how the crash happened. Officials have not yet released details about road conditions or possible driver error.
This tragedy highlights the risks uniformed personnel face while performing duties, whether on official assignments or traveling between work sites. The loss of four members of the Akuse Local Prison community represents a significant blow to the close‑knit correctional staff in the Eastern Region.
