The Member of Parliament for Akrofuom, Joseph Azumah, is set to petition the Speaker of Parliament following the chaotic scenes that unfolded during Tuesday’s proceedings, December 9, 2025.
Mr. Azumah, speaking on Nhyira FM’s ‘Kro Yi Mu Nsem’ with Barima Kofi Dawson (Akokoa), revealed that the petition, backed by two other Members of Parliament, calls for a thorough investigation into the disturbances. The chaos involved some lawmakers throwing objects in the direction of the Speaker’s chair.
“What we witnessed was not only a disruption of order but a direct affront to the very institution we serve,” he stated, adding that the actions were a clear breach of parliamentary standing orders.
The Akrofuom MP cautioned that if the rising tensions within the House are not addressed, they could escalate into more serious confrontations, a situation he described as “disastrous for Ghana’s democracy.”
He expressed his embarrassment at the incident, emphasizing that it occurred at a time when Ghanaians expect maturity and leadership from their representatives. “Our society looks up to us, and we are mentors to many of our youth. When we descend into chaos, it sends the wrong message and erodes the trust placed in us,” Azumah added.
Mr. Azumah stressed the urgent need for decisive action to safeguard the integrity and public image of Parliament. He urged his colleagues to engage in introspection and implement measures to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
The latest disruption follows a period of heightened tension in Parliament, stemming from disputes over the Kpandai parliamentary seat and other contentious legislative matters. Both lawmakers and civil society groups have consistently called for greater decorum and accountability within the legislative chamber to uphold democratic principles.
The petition is expected to formally request the public identification of those involved and the application of appropriate sanctions, in line with parliamentary regulations.
