Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey is demanding immediate prosecution in the Akonta Mining galamsey case, intensifying pressure on the government to take decisive action against illegal mining. The coalition’s outcry stems from what they describe as a concerning lack of accountability and perceived inaction regarding Akonta Mining’s alleged involvement in unlawful mining activities. The heart of the issue revolves around whether Akonta Mining has been held responsible for its operations and impact on the environment. The central demand is clear: those responsible within Akonta Mining should face prosecution.

The coalition’s statement underscores a growing sense of frustration among environmental activists and concerned citizens. They allege that Akonta Mining has operated with impunity, despite mounting evidence of wrongdoing. The key question remains: will the government heed the call for prosecution in the Akonta Mining galamsey matter?

“We are deeply disappointed and frankly shocked by the government’s failure to act decisively in this matter,” stated Kenneth Ashigbey, Convenor of the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey. “Despite clear evidence of illegal operations, sanctions have been delayed, and justice has been denied.”

The coalition’s statement outlines several key accusations against Akonta Mining. These include allegations that the company has been operating illegally since 2022, causing significant pollution to the Tano River and contributing to the destruction of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. These are serious claims, and the coalition argues that the government’s response has been inadequate.

The Tano River, a vital source of water for many communities, has allegedly suffered severe contamination due to Akonta Mining’s activities. Similarly, the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, a protected area of significant ecological value, has reportedly been ravaged by illegal mining operations linked to the company. The government’s apparent failure to protect these resources has drawn sharp criticism.

The coalition is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Akonta Mining’s Managing Director/CEO and all Directors. They are also demanding the prosecution of any culpable government officials, including those within the Mineral Commission, Forestry Commission, and Security Services, who may have facilitated or turned a blind eye to the alleged illegal activities. Furthermore, the coalition seeks a public justification for the delay in prosecution, demanding transparency and accountability from the relevant authorities.

“The government’s inaction sends a dangerous message that illegal mining can be carried out with impunity,” the coalition stated. “We urge the government to act now as a testament to their commitment to fighting galamsey and protecting our environment.”

The government’s response to these demands will have far-reaching implications for the fight against galamsey in Ghana. A failure to act decisively could embolden other illegal miners and undermine public trust in the government’s commitment to environmental protection. Conversely, a swift and transparent prosecution of those responsible could send a strong signal that illegal mining will not be tolerated.

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has vowed to continue its advocacy efforts until justice is served. They are urging citizens to stay informed, support efforts to combat illegal mining, and demand accountability from their elected officials. The Akonta Mining galamsey case represents a critical test of the government’s resolve to tackle this pervasive problem.

The Coalition’s demands for prosecution underscore the severity of the accusations against Akonta Mining. Accountability and transparency are paramount in addressing illegal mining in Ghana, and the need for swift prosecution in the Akonta Mining galamsey case cannot be overstated.
