Aj is a university student who visited Ghana on voluntary mission to explore Ghana on one of his vacations during college days.
This is what he think about Ghanaian education system!
When I visited Ghana in 2017 to teach at Analog-Avete L.A. Basic School, I was impressed by my students’ knowledge of the English language and mathematics. I requested to teach an older class of students because I wanted to go more in depth into certain topics, such as grammar and chemistry. In America, the lessons I taught are commonly introduced to students in the fifth grade. I was most surprised by the range of ages in my class. Some students were quite young, while others were over 18 years old. It is uncommon for students to be of such different ages in America unless the course is university-level.
My students in Ghana were mostly Christian, which allowed me to relate to them more easily. My favorite aspect of the Ghanaian education system was how everyone in the room would clap if a student answered a question correctly. I wish we had such encouragement in the USA!
I remember all of the students were amazed by my camera. Some of the best photos from my trip were taken by my students! However, I do not think technology is the most effective tool in education. Reading is the best way to learn. And sometimes, it can be fun! Students who read learn to comprehend and construct sentences more easily than students who do not read. I also think it’s important for teachers to initiate classroom discussions around certain topics. In my experience, I’ve found that students learn better when they talk and reach conclusions amongst themselves. The teacher should not do all the work for them! Teamwork is a great way to make students excited about learning.
My university, The New School in New York City, has the highest international student population in the USA. I would encourage my friends in Ghana to search the internet for scholarships and study-abroad opportunities (at any university in America or Europe). You may need to write an essay about why you want to study abroad in order to receive scholarship funding. Don’t be afraid to ask questions over phone/email to a representative at one of these schools. Education administrators are happy to help you find the correct resources. Universities in America are always looking for international students, as it adds diversity to their school community.
