An Accra Circuit Court has granted GH₵200,000 bail with two sureties to Kwame Asare, a 26-year-old corn miller, who stands accused of plotting to set shops ablaze at the bustling Kantamanto Market.
The Court, presided over by Mrs. Susanna Eduful, stipulated that the sureties must be immediate family members of the accused, each demonstrating a monthly income of at least GH₵1,500.
Asare, who pleaded not guilty to the charge of preparation to commit a crime – specifically, causing unlawful damage – is scheduled to reappear before the court on January 27, 2026.
Presenting the facts to the Court, Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye‑Okuffo revealed that National Security personnel were the initial complainants in the matter. He explained that Asare, based at Kantamanto, was apprehended on December 9th following intelligence reports indicating he was strategically planning to burn shops within the market.
According to Chief Inspector Teye‑Okuffo, during questioning, Asare “reportedly” stated that certain individuals operating in the market were causing him distress, prompting him to consider arson as a retaliatory measure.
A subsequent search of Asare’s room at the market led to the discovery of a gallon containing a substantial amount of petrol, which was promptly seized as evidence. “Investigations are still ongoing,” Chief Inspector Teye‑Okuffo stated to the court.
