Black Stars midfielder Abu Francis is showing encouraging signs of recovery, returning to the gym just 25 days after sustaining a fracture during a recent international friendly match.
The 24-year-old suffered a double fracture to his leg following an awkward challenge while attempting to block a shot by Japan’s Ao Tanaka in the November defeat.
Francis underwent a successful surgery at Toyota Memorial Hospital in Japan, coordinated by the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) medical chief, Dr. Prince Pambo, in collaboration with medical personnel from his club, Toulouse FC, and Japanese surgeons.
“Francis Abu is making steady progress in his rehabilitation after he hit the gym this week as part of his recovery process,” a statement from the Ghana FA confirmed.
“His current state is another phase of the rehabilitation process… the FA wishes to state that the player is doing extremely well and will get back to full fitness.”
While a lengthy absence remains expected, this return to training represents a positive step in Francis’s bid to regain full fitness, potentially in time for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The midfielder, who recently joined Toulouse from Cercle Brugge, had earned a call-up to the Black Stars squad for the November friendlies, having previously missed the World Cup qualifiers in September and October.
