The Presidency has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, after a video circulated showing him gifting dollar notes to Patricia Asieduaa, also known as Agradaa. The incident, which quickly went viral, sparked public criticism and raised questions about the conduct of public officials. In response, the Presidency summoned Mr. Gyamfi, and following his apology for what he termed an “unfortunate act of indiscretion,” the government has signaled its intent to move forward, considering the matter resolved after a formal caution.

Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu released an official statement outlining the Presidency’s position. He detailed that the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, had cautioned Sammy Gyamfi, emphasizing the need for those in public service to adhere to higher ethical standards and be acutely aware of public expectations. The incident involving Sammy Gyamfi and his gift to Agradaa put a spotlight on the behavior of public officials.

The video showed Sammy Gyamfi handing dollar notes to Agradaa, a social media personality. This act ignited a wave of public criticism, with many questioning the appropriateness of such a gift, especially given Mr. Gyamfi’s position as acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board.

Following the public outcry, Mr. Gyamfi issued an apology, acknowledging the concerns raised by the video. He described his actions as an “unfortunate act of indiscretion,” a sentiment that seemingly paved the way for the Presidency’s response.

“So in view of that, the Presidency does not believe that any further actions ought to be taken beyond the apology and the caution,” – Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized the importance of public officials being sensitive to the expectations of Ghanaians. Public officials, he noted, are held to a higher standard than private citizens and must be mindful of how their actions are perceived.

The Presidency’s stance underscores the necessity for public officials to not only act ethically but also to be aware of the public perception of their actions. While private behavior may be subject to different standards, those in public roles are expected to maintain a greater level of accountability and transparency.

The government also emphasized that it values the feedback received from the public regarding the incident. The Presidency reiterated its commitment to upholding the high standards expected by Ghanaians, underscoring a dedication to good governance and ethical conduct.

“We are aware that Ghanaians expect high standards in the performance of our duties as public officials. We remain committed to meeting those high standards to ensure that we deliver the best of governance to our people,” said Felix Kwakye Ofosu.

To ensure high standards are maintained, the government plans to continuously monitor public sentiment and reinforce ethical conduct through regular reminders and training for public officials. Sammy Gyamfi, for his part, has pledged to align his actions with public expectations moving forward in his role as acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board.

The Presidency’s decision to consider the apology and caution sufficient in the case of Sammy Gyamfi highlights the crucial role of public perception and accountability in governance. The incident served as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with public office.
