In a world grappling with increasing divisions, Rotary International President-Elect Mario Cesar Martins de Camargo is championing a powerful message: “unite for good.” This call to action serves as more than just a slogan; it’s a guiding philosophy aimed at fostering collaboration and bridging divides across political, social, and economic landscapes. During a recent visit to Ghana, de Camargo emphasized Rotary’s unique capacity to connect individuals regardless of faith, race, or ideology. His vision centers on harnessing this power to address pressing global challenges. This article delves into de Camargo’s vision, the strategic objectives for Rotary in Africa, and the pivotal role of service above self in a world urgently seeking unity. The call to action to unite for good could not come at a more crucial time.

De Camargo’s theme stems from a growing concern over global division and the rise of extremism. “We see it’s probably true here… but I see that in a lot of countries, political environments are growing more and more divided,” de Camargo observed, highlighting how issues that should be uniting communities are instead fueling hostility. He emphasizes that differing perspectives should be embraced rather than feared. “Thinking differently is not bad—it’s good, provided you think with respect for the opposing side,” he stated, underscoring the importance of tolerance and a positive outlook in overcoming division.

Expanding Rotary’s membership base in Africa is a key strategic focus. “We should increase our numbers,” de Camargo noted, emphasizing the need to strengthen the organization’s presence across the continent. Building robust partnerships with government institutions is also vital. “We must bring the concept of partnership—partnership between Rotary and the government, with public institutions like hospitals, schools, environmental and microeconomic agencies. Those are our areas of focus,” de Camargo explained. Rotary aims to be a driving force for structured, sustained action, moving beyond traditional charity models to create lasting impact. The organization’s commitment to unite for good in Africa is tangible.

“Service Above Self” is not merely a slogan but a core principle at the heart of Rotary’s philosophy. “If we only think of ourselves, Rotary will die,” de Camargo stated, stressing that the organization’s true purpose lies in serving those in need. This entails focusing on assisting the handicapped, illiterate, poor, and those struggling with addiction. Rotary must consistently look beyond itself to remain relevant and effective, ensuring that its actions align with its mission to unite for good.

Rotary Zone 22 Director Daniel Tanase emphasizes the need for transformation, particularly in attracting younger members. “We are doing good with membership—not only in numbers, but also in age,” Tanase noted. With over 60,000 Rotaractors actively involved, these young leaders bring valuable skills and a fresh perspective to the organization. Rotary’s ability to engage the next generation is crucial for its continued success and its ability to unite for good in the years to come.

In Ghana, Rotary District 9104 launched a raffle initiative to raise one million Ghana cedis for vital community projects. District Governor Florence Maame Hagan noted the excitement surrounding the initiative, even though the financial target was not fully met. The raffle’s unexpected winner highlights the role of providence and the strong community spirit that Rotary fosters. Local initiatives such as these showcase Rotary’s dedication to unite for good at the grassroots level.

President-Elect de Camargo’s call to “unite for good” resonates deeply in today’s world. By expanding its reach, strengthening partnerships, and embracing its core philosophy of service above self, Rotary can continue to be a powerful force for positive change. As global crises test our solidarity, Rotary’s values are more vital than ever in fostering a united and compassionate world. Consider getting involved with Rotary to make a tangible difference and unite for good.
