ECG Prepares for Festive Season Power Demand in Ashanti

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ashanti Region has assured residents of a stable power supply during the upcoming Christmas festivities. The company has implemented special technical and resource measures to manage the anticipated surge in electricity demand.

With many Ghanaians expected to remain home during the holiday season, the ECG projects a significant increase in power consumption, which could strain existing infrastructure. To proactively address this, the Ashanti South Region, which includes major districts like Obuasi, New Edubiase, Bekwai, Asokwa, Dunkwa, and Manso Nkwanta, has deployed standby technical teams.

“Now a lot of customers will be home, which means demand will shoot up and put pressure on our sources and infrastructure,” explained Ashanti South Region General Manager, Ing. Jonathan Adjabeng. “In this view, we have put in place measures to accommodate these pressures. We have deployed standby staff to provide complimentary services, and some of our offices will remain open to offer specialized assistance to customers.”

Ing. Adjabeng further encouraged customers to utilize the ECG’s cashless payment options, including mobile money and the Power App, to improve convenience and contribute to revenue mobilization. “Cashless payment platforms, QR codes, and short codes have played a major role in curbing extortion and enhancing our revenue collection,” he stated.

The ECG’s preparations also include investments in network upgrades. Since the beginning of the year, the company has completed 35 infrastructure projects valued at approximately $20 million nationwide. These projects aim to alleviate pressure on feeders and enhance overall voltage quality.

According to Ing. Adjabeng, the company has intensified reforms across key operational areas. These include the Loss Reduction Project (LRP), which involves replacing older meters with modern ones to improve billing accuracy and reduce losses. Furthermore, proactive fault detection systems are being implemented to identify and resolve potential issues before they cause outages.

The ECG emphasizes that its mandate is to provide reliable, safe, and quality electricity to support the socio-economic development of Ghana, and these efforts are a testament to that commitment.
