Kofi Bentil Proposes Special Court for Election Cases

Lawyer and Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Kofi Bentil, has advocated for a dedicated special court to handle cases of election-related violence in Ghana.

Mr. Bentil put forth this proposal during a discussion of the ongoing Kpandai election dispute on JoyNews’ Newsfile program on Saturday.

He argued that a specialized judicial body would ensure swift and impartial resolution of electoral conflicts, ultimately bolstering public trust in Ghana’s democratic institutions. “We need to go back and finish this business of the election petition court. Why can’t we take 20 judges, make them election petition experts, when there is an election petition, they sit on it, draw them from the normal court, they sit on it until it is done, and the process stops at the Appeal (Court),” he questioned.

According to Mr. Bentil, such a court would offer a focused and consistent approach to prosecuting election-related offences, thereby minimizing delays, curbing violence, and strengthening the rule of law. “We need to do this and avoid all these things,” he emphasized.
