Ghana and Canada are working to strengthen economic ties, with discussions focusing on boosting trade and investment, particularly for small businesses and the agricultural sector.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Myriam Montrat, met with the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, in Accra on Friday, December 19, 2025. The talks centred on diversifying trade and improving access to markets for Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

High Commissioner Montrat highlighted the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to facilitate increased trade between Ghana and Canada. She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to resolve regulatory challenges that might discourage Canadian investors.

“Improved trade facilitation will encourage more Canadian companies to explore opportunities in Ghana,” she stated.

The High Commissioner also revealed that Air Canada is considering launching operations in Ghana. “Improved air connectivity would boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people relations between our two countries,” she added.

Responding to the High Commissioner, Minister Ofosu-Adjare reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to attracting foreign investment, especially in value-added agribusiness. She explained that the government has already secured land free from legal disputes to support investors interested in contract commercial farming.

“We are committed to creating a conducive business environment,” the Minister assured, underscoring the importance of better connectivity for trade and investment.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both Ghana and Canada to expand their economic partnership and foster sustainable growth.
