Ghana Seeks to Be Africa's Gateway in US Talks

Ghana is positioning itself as a key gateway to the African market, following the formal presentation of credentials by its new Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, to President Donald J. Trump.

The ceremony, held at the White House, saw President Trump receive credentials from 15 newly appointed ambassadors. Ambassador Smith was the first to be received, officially commencing his diplomatic duties in Washington D.C.

A lighthearted moment marked the exchange, with President Trump reportedly remarking, “Look at this good-looking guy,” upon meeting Ambassador Smith, eliciting laughter from those present and setting a positive tone for the discussion.

Ambassador Smith conveyed greetings from President John Dramani Mahama and outlined Ghana’s priorities for strengthened engagement with the U.S., focusing on trade, investment, and economic cooperation.

He emphasized Ghana’s political stability, democratic governance, and welcoming investment climate as factors making it a reliable entry point into Africa. According to Ambassador Smith, Ghana provides access not only to its own market but also to broader regional and continental opportunities.

A central aspect of this positioning, the Ambassador explained, is Ghana’s hosting of the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). “This places Ghana at the heart of efforts to boost trade within Africa and integrate African markets,” he stated.

Ambassador Smith further indicated Ghana’s eagerness to attract increased U.S. investment in sectors like manufacturing, agribusiness, energy, technology, and services. He stressed that investments in Ghana can effectively serve as a base for wider African supply chains and markets.

With the presentation of credentials complete, Ambassador Smith is now formally authorized to represent Ghana in the United States, as both nations work towards bolstering diplomatic ties and expanding economic partnerships, with Ghana aiming to be a stable and strategic hub for American engagement across the continent.
