AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Obuasi Mine has donated a new fire tender to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Obuasi, a move aimed at bolstering emergency response and protecting lives and property within the municipality.
The donation is part of AGA’s commitment to safety and community support through its corporate social responsibility programs.
Speaking at the presentation, Samuel Pobee, Managing Director of AGA Obuasi Mine, explained the intervention was necessary due to the poor condition of the Fire Service’s existing tender, rendering it unable to effectively handle emergencies. “Safety is a core value at AngloGold Ashanti, and we are committed to supporting state institutions and our host communities with resources that enhance public safety,” he stated.
Mr. Pobee further noted that the new vehicle would significantly improve emergency preparedness in Obuasi, particularly as the town expands and the number of potential high-risk areas increases.
Faustilove Appiah Kanin, Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, who received the fire tender on behalf of the Assembly and the Fire Service, expressed gratitude for the “timely intervention.” She assured AGA of the Assembly’s full cooperation in maintaining the vehicle and ensuring it serves the needs of the residents.
DOII Matthew Atubigah, Obuasi Municipal Fire Commander, also welcomed the donation, emphasizing its potential to transform the Service’s capabilities. “This new fire truck will significantly improve our ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to fire outbreaks and other emergencies,” he said, adding that it is “critical to enhancing public safety across the municipality.”
The gesture reinforces the strong partnership between AGA Obuasi Mine, the Municipal Assembly, and the Fire Service, as the mining company continues to invest in initiatives that promote safety, emergency preparedness, and sustainable development in its operational areas.
