Minerals Commission Praises Zijin for Sustainable Mining Efforts

Zijin Golden Ridge Limited has earned high praise from the Koforidua Division of the Minerals Commission for its dedication to sustainable and responsible mining practices.

The Commission has further encouraged the company to maintain strong relationships with its host communities, fostering a climate of peaceful coexistence.

Regina Abbey, Principal Inspector of the Minerals Commission in Koforidua, expressed the Commission’s initial reservations and subsequent positive assessment during Zijin’s End-of-Year Stakeholder Dinner. “When we learnt that Zijin was going to take over the Akyem mine, we were a bit sceptical. Now we realise that Zijin’s operations are entirely different,” she stated.

Ms. Abbey added, “We are hoping that Zijin will continue to mine sustainably, taking into consideration the health and safety of the workers, and then also protecting the general public.”

The dinner, hosted by the mining company, brought together key stakeholders including chiefs, community leaders, regulators, and members of the media.

Zijin Golden Ridge Limited, a subsidiary of Zijin Mining Group Co. Ltd., assumed control of the Akyem Gold Mine in April 2025 and has since ensured its continued operation as one of Ghana’s largest gold mines.

Looking ahead, the company plans to significantly increase its mining production, from 27 million tonnes currently to 37 million tonnes in 2026, and ultimately to 53 million tonnes by 2028.

Gold output is also projected to see substantial growth, rising from five tonnes this year to 8.5 tonnes in 2026, and reaching 10 tonnes in 2028, with a long-term goal of annual production increases.
