The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has warned power transmission and distribution agencies that stricter performance monitoring will be implemented in 2026. He emphasized that ongoing inefficiencies within the sector are unacceptable.
Dr. Jinapor made the announcement while addressing heads of various agencies during a strategic planning retreat. He pinpointed power transmission as a crucial area needing urgent improvement to meet Ghana’s increasing electricity demands and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources.
“Our ability to evacuate power from generation sources and transmit it efficiently across the country is fundamental to system reliability,” the Minister stated. He further added that delays in upgrading transmission infrastructure must cease.
The Energy Minister also voiced concerns regarding persistent issues in the distribution sector, specifically highlighting significant losses, inadequate revenue collection, and subpar customer service at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
“ECG and NEDCo must become more efficient, financially sustainable, and customer-focused,” Dr Jinapor stressed, indicating a clear expectation for improved performance.
According to the Minister, these agencies will be held accountable based on defined benchmarks relating to loss reduction, billing accuracy, revenue collection rates, and overall service delivery. This move comes as Ghana prepares for a surge in electricity demand fueled by industrial expansion and the recently proposed 24-hour economy policy.
