Celebrated Ghanaian playwright, Uncle Ebo Whyte, has urged Ghanaians to approach politics with a more relaxed perspective, describing it as a game often misunderstood by the public.
Speaking to Joy News, Uncle Ebo explained that the theme of politics in his latest play, ‘Order for Four,’ stemmed from his observation that politicians themselves don’t necessarily take the arena as gravely as their constituents.
“I have always wondered why non-politicians take politics too seriously because my experience is that the politicians don’t take themselves too seriously. Not that they are not serious people, they are very serious people, but it’s a game and they understand that,” he said.
He further clarified that political rivalry shouldn’t equate to personal animosity. “In fact, there will be people who will be surprised to find that the politicians are friends. But they are, and they understand that. The fact that I am NDC and you are MPP doesn’t mean we should be enemies. We would argue, we would argue, we would put forth our points strongly, but that is not enmity, it’s just for the sake of the nation,” Uncle Ebo underlined.
According to Uncle Ebo, a common pitfall for Ghanaians is allowing political differences to create unnecessary division. “Unfortunately, those of us whom they are serving do not recognize that it’s a game for them and so we could even laugh about it, we could even be light-hearted about it, but people get… so, so… and I wish more people, more Ghanaians would understand that and not get so worked up to the point where they want to… they want to fight,” he highlighted.
‘Order for Four’ employs humor to reflect the dynamics of Ghanaian politics. Uncle Ebo hopes the play will encourage audiences to consider how they perceive political interactions, blending the subject with themes of love and everyday life.
“Politics should not overshadow relationships and the other aspects of life. You can engage critically without letting it consume your emotions,” he emphasized. Through storytelling, music, and humor, the play challenges conventional views on politics, advocating for a more thoughtful and less emotionally charged approach.
