Former President John Dramani Mahama has been bestowed with the prestigious title of Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source by His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, the Ooni of Ife, in a colourful ceremony held in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria.
The highly esteemed Yoruba chieftaincy, which translates to a ‘President who reorders the global space for the good of humanity,’ recognizes President Mahama’s exemplary leadership and unwavering commitment to global cooperation, fairness, and sustainable development.
This honour places the former Ghanaian leader among a distinguished group of individuals acknowledged for their significant impact beyond national boundaries. The installation followed days of meticulous traditional preparations and cultural observances at the Ooni’s palace.
The palace grounds were beautifully adorned with rich traditional décor as chiefs, dignitaries, and members of the Yoruba community gathered to witness the historic event. Observers described the ceremony as deeply symbolic.
This latest recognition builds upon the previous honour conferred on President Mahama within the Yoruba cultural sphere. In October 2015, he received the title Aare Atolase of Offa from the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State, acknowledging his contributions to leadership, peace, and diplomacy across the African continent.
Many believe this chieftaincy will further strengthen the already robust cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Nigeria, underscoring the long-standing historical connections between the two nations. “This is a testament to the respect President Mahama commands across Africa,” noted a political analyst following the event.
The Ooni of Ife, a highly revered traditional ruler among the Yoruba people, remains a pivotal figure in promoting cultural heritage, interfaith harmony, and socio-economic progress throughout Nigeria and the African diaspora.
