Private legal practitioner Victor Kwadjoga Adawudu has urged Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to take a firmer stance against disorder in the House, warning that a failure to do so could negatively impact his legacy.
Mr. Adawudu, speaking on Joy News’ Newsfile programme, acknowledged the Speaker’s deep understanding and extensive experience in parliamentary affairs, emphasizing that his credentials command respect both within Ghana and internationally.
However, he argued that Speaker Bagbin appears to have adopted a more lenient approach, leading to a continuation of unruly behaviour among legislators.
“Everybody respects the Speaker for the depth of his knowledge and his experience in handling Parliament,” Mr Adawudu said. “But I think that he has relaxed in the eyes of the public. He should not end on a bad note.”
He further warned that the current leadership has overseen numerous breaches of parliamentary conduct without adequate repercussions, a situation he fears will be viewed unfavourably by future generations.
The call for action follows chaotic scenes that unfolded in Parliament on Tuesday, when Minority MPs vacated their seats and moved to the centre of the chamber during a heated debate over the declaration of the Kpandai parliamentary seat as vacant.
The disruption temporarily suspended proceedings, occurring despite repeated cautions issued by Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, who had rejected the Minority’s objections.
Mr. Adawudu stressed that decisive action from the Speaker, including the imposition of sanctions for unparliamentary conduct, is crucial to safeguarding the dignity of Parliament and maintaining public trust in Ghana’s legislative process.
