Koforidua is hosting a national funeral today for former Defence Minister, Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, at Jackson’s Park.

The solemn event, scheduled to begin at 12:00 noon in the New Juaben South Municipality, is expected to be attended by high-ranking government officials, leading members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), traditional rulers, and members of the public.

Dr Omane Boamah tragically passed away on August 6, 2025, in a military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of all eight individuals on board. The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter, bearing the tail number GHF 631, went down during an official operation.

Alongside Dr Omane Boamah, the crash also resulted in the deaths of Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, the Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice-Chair; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Since his passing, tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, with many acknowledging Dr. Omane Boamah’s unwavering commitment to public service, national security, and the principles of democratic governance. “He was a committed servant of the state whose work strengthened both our party and the country,” an NDC official stated.

The funeral ceremony at Jackson’s Park is anticipated to be a deeply moving and symbolic occasion, reflecting the national significance of the lives lost in the devastating incident. The tragedy has also sparked renewed calls for enhanced aviation safety measures and robust institutional safeguards within public service operations.
