Senyo Hosi Slams Ghana's Democracy Amid Parliament Chaos

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, Senyo Hosi, has sharply criticised Ghana’s political leadership following the chaotic scenes that unfolded in Parliament on Tuesday, December 9. He questioned the image of governance the country is projecting to the international community.

Mr. Hosi was reacting to the turmoil that erupted when members of the Minority Caucus staged a protest by abandoning their seats and converging in the centre of the parliamentary chamber during a discussion on Joy News’ Newsfile on Saturday.

The confrontation briefly escalated into a scuffle, forcing an abrupt halt to parliamentary proceedings. The unrest stemmed from disagreements over the declaration of the Kpandai parliamentary seat as vacant, a decision the Minority vehemently opposes, citing procedural flaws and illegality.

According to reports, tensions had been building prior to the incident after the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, dismissed the Minority’s repeated objections, further inflaming the situation.

Mr. Hosi described the scenes as deeply disturbing and unbecoming of a Parliament expected to uphold the highest standards of governance and leadership. “What kind of governance are we trying to communicate to the world?” he asked, adding, “It is not something anybody sitting there would ever condone.”

He accused lawmakers of turning Parliament into a platform for trivial disputes, warning that such behaviour undermines public trust and weakens the institution’s authority. “Let’s be careful. There is some bickering going on in Parliament, and you must start rising above it and stop acting like children,” he stated.

“You are acting like kids. There should be some adults in the room to make sure there is proper order in Parliament,” Mr. Hosi emphasised.

He further stressed the far-reaching impact of MPs’ actions, particularly given that parliamentary proceedings are broadcast live nationwide. “People watch you on live television, and you are supposed to be the crème de la crème as far as governance in this country is concerned,” he noted. “We learn from you. The tone of this country is what we see. You are the leaders of the country.”
