Ghana’s Military Makes History: General Oppong-Peprah Becomes First 4-Star General

Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah of the Ghana Armed Forces has made history by becoming the first-ever 4-Star General in the military’s history. This accomplishment was announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, signifying a major stride in the development of Ghana’s military leadership.

This promotion coincides with the GAF’s ongoing expansion, which includes the establishment of new commands. As the Chief of Defence Staff, General Oppong-Peprah’s move up in rank is crucial to manage the increasing responsibilities within the military.

A notable change in the GAF’s leadership tradition occurred with the promotion, as the force typically has a 3-star Lieutenant General leading it. However, General Oppong-Peprah’s promotion to a 4-star general marks a significant deviation from this norm.

General Oppong-Peprah’s impressive career spans decades, demonstrating his commitment to serving Ghana. After being commissioned into the GAF in 1986, he has held prominent roles such as Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of the Army Staff, Chief of the Defence Staff, Operations/Training Officer, and Commanding Officer of the 64 Infantry Regiment. He has also garnered international experience, serving as Humanitarian Officer with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda and Military Observer with the United Nations Aouzou Strip Observer Group in Libya/Chad.
