Two-goal Haaland fires Norway into last 32 with win over Senegal

Sports

Erling Haaland’s two goals secured Norway’s passage to the World Cup last 32 with a victory over Senegal in New Jersey, marking the striker’s continued dominance on the international stage.

Haaland, the Manchester City forward, now has four World Cup goals in just two matches, surpassing any previous Norwegian player’s tally in the tournament’s history.

The match began with Norway taking an early lead through full-back Marcus Pederson, who capitalised on a defensive error by Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly. Haaland then doubled the advantage shortly after halftime, finishing clinically from Martin Odegaard’s through-ball to become Norway’s all-time leading World Cup scorer.

Although Ismaila Sarr pulled one back for Senegal and later threatened a dramatic equaliser, Haaland restored Norway’s two-goal lead with a composed side-foot volley that struck the bar before crossing the line.

Sarr’s late header hit the woodwork as Norway held on for a second consecutive group-stage win, topping Group I alongside France. Senegal must now defeat Iraq in their final match to retain any hope of advancing.

Haaland has now scored in 12 consecutive competitive matches for Norway, with at least two goals in each of the last six. His performances have silenced critics who questioned his ability to handle the pressure of leading a national team’s attack at a major tournament.

The striker’s exceptional form for Manchester City has translated seamlessly to international football, where he continues to demonstrate the clinical finishing and intelligent movement that have made him one of the world’s most feared forwards.

While a first World Cup hat-trick remains elusive, Haaland’s trajectory suggests it is only a matter of time before he adds that milestone to his growing list of achievements.
