Queiroz Dismisses Claims of External Influence Over Black Stars Selections

Sports

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has firmly rejected suggestions that external forces influence his selection decisions for the Black Stars, delivering a characteristically direct response during a media engagement ahead of the team’s friendly against Wales.

When a journalist pressed the Portuguese tactician on whether individuals outside the technical team had any sway over his squad choices, Queiroz appeared visibly amused before offering a pointed reply. “Look at me nicely, look at me nicely again, and you are going to have the answer to your question,” he said with a grin. “You see my answer? You don’t see me smiling? That’s my answer to you.”

The exchange drew laughter from those present, but the underlying message was unmistakable: Queiroz considers himself fully autonomous in choosing who represents Ghana at international level.

The question of outside interference in Black Stars call-ups is not new. For years, sections of Ghanaian football fandom have debated whether coaches at the national level enjoy genuine independence in squad selection or whether political and administrative pressures shape who gets called up. Queiroz’s response signals that he has no intention of entertaining such speculation.

The former Real Madrid, Portugal, and Iran manager is currently preparing Ghana for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Wales friendly serving as part of the team’s build-up. His tenure has already been marked by significant decisions, including the confirmation that vice-captain Alexander Djiku will miss the World Cup through injury, with Lucasson called up as a replacement.

Queiroz is expected to announce his squad for Ghana’s upcoming international assignments in the coming weeks. If his remarks at the media session are anything to go by, that squad will bear the imprint of one man and one man alone.
