Sadio Mané’s leadership on and off the pitch has cemented his legacy as a great human being and footballer, following Senegal’s dramatic Africa Cup of Nations victory over Morocco.
Mané, who will play his final AFCON, turned words into action when he urged his teammates to return to the pitch after a walk-off protest, preventing a lasting stain on African football’s biggest stage.
Senegal’s victory was marked by drama, including a disallowed goal, a late VAR-awarded penalty, and a stunning winner in extra time, but Mané’s intervention was the defining moment.
After the match, Mané explained his thinking, saying he didn’t think it was a penalty, but if the referee decides, you have to respect it, and that he would rather lose than see something like that happen to the game.
Mané’s actions were praised by his coach, Pape Thiaw, who apologised for instructing his players to leave the pitch, and by Senegalese-French actor Omar Sy and Senegalese-American singer Akon, who congratulated him in person.
Mané’s legacy was already secure long before the final whistle in Rabat, and his influence on the team was evident as he lifted the AFCON trophy, despite not being the official captain.
