The Obuasi Police Command has apprehended 40 individuals in a series of coordinated raids targeting suspected criminal and drug dens within Obuasi and its surrounding communities.
The operation, which commenced at 5:00 a.m. and concluded at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, December 16, was spearheaded by ASP Adam Muakalu, with support from the Divisional Operations Unit, Obuasi District Police, and the Formed Police Unit (FPU) Obuasi Base.
According to a police situational report, the areas covered included Bedieso, Kunka Junction, Abompe, and Akaporiso – all suburbs of Obuasi. At Bedieso, eight suspects were arrested, and a black polythene bag containing substances suspected to be cannabis was recovered.
Moving to Kunka Junction, one suspect was found with a wrapped package of dried leaves also suspected to be cannabis. Eleven more individuals attempted to escape when police arrived, but were apprehended after a brief pursuit.
The team then focused on Abompe, where several suspects were arrested at a location described as a “ghetto” where they were allegedly engaged in smoking. Two bottles of alcohol suspected of being laced with cannabis were also seized.
The operation extended to Akaporiso, near Obuasi, resulting in the arrest of another suspect and the recovery of more suspected cannabis. Further arrests were made behind an unfinished building, where individuals were allegedly smoking and consuming alcohol.
A pack of tramadol was also confiscated during the operation. All 40 suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, and the seized items are being held for forensic analysis.
Police have indicated that those found in possession of illegal substances will be brought before the court as quickly as possible. “We will continue to sustain these operations to clamp down on criminal activities and improve the safety of our municipality,” Detective Chief Inspector Odoom Stephen of the District Criminal Investigations Department (DCID), Obuasi, assured the public.
